When Jamie MacLean discovered she was pregnant in 2013, she decided to take a holistic approach to her health by choosing natural and organic products.
However, she soon became frustrated by her lack of options. She realized that many modern household and beauty products are full of synthetic chemicals with names we can hardly pronounce.
Out of her frustration, Jamie created a solution: She founded Petal & Post, an online store that carries organic, natural and ethically made products — without compromising quality or luxury.
BMO and Your Financial Life sat down with Jamie to pick her brain about what drives her business. Here’s what she had to say…
On starting a business
It helped that she had 20 years of experience in the retail industry, as well as an interest in being her own boss: “I have an entrepreneurial spirit within,” she explains, “and I’ve always dreamed of running my own business.”
Jamie’s background in branding and retail gave her the insight she needed to be successful. And, while starting a business is hard, her passion for making organic and natural products accessible to others drove her to launch Petal & Post.
Every small business owner knows that starting a business involves long hours and growing pains.
“A major challenge for me, like everyone else, is not having enough time,” says Jamie, who manages nearly everything for her business, while also juggling the demands of being a mother to her two small children. Like many small business owners, Jamie would love a few more hours in her day.
Being your own boss can be full of ups and downs. The challenges can be tough to deal with, but what keeps Jamie going day-to-day is seeing the results of her work.
“I have a really strong entrepreneurial drive,” she says, “and I really enjoyed taking a bootstrap approach to building this company up.”
Seeing the fruits of her labour keeps Jamie inspired: “I’ve managed every single aspect of the business, and this to me is incredibly rewarding and motivates me every day.”
On BMO supporting her business
Starting your own business can be difficult enough. And if you add finances to the mix? It can get a lot more complicated. Business owners need to manage cash flow, taxes, and more, all of which can take your time and attention away from other key areas of your business.
That’s why it’s important to have the right financial support system in place. For Jamie, that support has come from BMO.
“BMO has really simplified the management of my finances,” she says. “They’ve given me a dedicated account manager who checks in on me, and I really never thought you could get that level of service from a bank.”
